In February of this year, we spoke to Joanne Gorton, Day Support Manager at 皇家华人 Trafford. She explained how their specialised day support had called upon the services of some dogs to bring some joy to local people with dementia and help them unlock memories of their own pets.
鈥淚 thought we鈥檇 give it a go as we have some amazing family pets that I knew would be good with older people,鈥 Joanne told us at the time. 鈥淎nd two years on it鈥檚 still working out brilliantly.鈥
鈥淚t鈥檚 hard to describe the moment when someone鈥檚 face lights up and they have that connection with an animal,鈥 continued Joanne. "It helps in many ways."
We were so intrigued to hear about the likes of Dave the chihuahua and Louie the Shih Tzu, and the enthusiastic reactions and recollections they elicit from older people, we decided to pay them a visit to meet them.
Watch our video to witness the connection between the dogs and their loving human pals, and to hear Joanne discussing the importance of interactions like this.
A canine connection
鈥淣ot everyone has a dog anymore because they鈥檙e at that age when they can鈥檛 spend the time [looking] after [them],鈥 explains Joanne in our video. 鈥淵ou can see how much [the older people] miss that connection, so if we can give that little bit back, to have a little bit of a cuddle and feel nice and happy, then that鈥檚 a good thing.鈥
